County appoints interim manager

Stephen Lopez, a county official who has overseen the area’s emergency response to Covid-19 and the 2019 migrant crisis, was appointed as the interim county manager on April 23.

Fernando Macias, who served as county manager for six years, leaves the job on April 30. Macias and the Board of County Commissioners failed to find common ground when negotiating the evaluation process for Macias’ yearly review in February.

The vote to approve Lopez for the interim position was unanimous.

“(Lopez) is a level-headed, honest, transparent individual,” said commissioner Susana Chaparro.

Lopez's appointment is effective May 1. He’ll receive a yearly salary of $162,000.
