A Las Cruces man wanted in connection with a 2008 murder was booked into jail following an arrest in Mexico.
Oswaldo Corral, 45, was booked on charges of first-degree murder, armed robbery, aggravated burglary and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary. Police believe Corral killed 30-year-old Steven Apodaca, who was shot in the chest during a burglary on Nov. 17, 2008.
“Corral had been using a false name, and identification documents were obtained under this false name while in Mexico. His apprehension was made possible through the Sheriff’s Office’s partnership with the United States Marshal’s Service and with the cooperation of Mexican authorities,” a news release from the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office said.
According to court records, police in 2008 believed that Corral and others attacked Apodaca after they believed Apodaca had taken money from them. When the group confronted Corral at his residence, Corral killed Apodaca and took $1,100 from him, investigators allege.
In all, six men were implicated in the attack. Three were convicted of robbery. One pled guilty to murder. One, 35-year-old Lawrence Chavira, remains at large.
Corral is scheduled for an arraignment on May 28. As of the publication of this article, he remains in jail.
