Years of tireless work from Heather Pollard and Steve Newby were officially honored this week by the City of Las Cruces, which proclaimed July 17 both Heather Pollard Day and Steve Newby Day.

During proclamations read by District 3 City Councilor Becki Graham, each were recognized for their ongoing efforts in the yearslong transformation of Downtown. Prior to 2008 Main Street still had metal awnings, no through traffic and dozens of vacant buildings.

Pollard was noted as the original executive director of the Doña Ana Arts Council, which was instrumental in the renovation of the Rio Grande Theatre, considered a key element in the rebirth of Downtown. She was also recognized for her arts and community efforts, and her entrepreneurship.

Newby, an architect, worked on many facets of Downtown, and was recognized for those contributions as well as playing a role in Las Cruces’ economic growth and vitality and fostering a sense of pride in community through his architecture.
