La Mecha Contemporary, 3803 Frutas Ave. in El Paso, which includes a number of Las Cruces artists, is hosting “Create Something Beautiful: The Founding Member’s Group Show,” through Saturday, May 20, the gallery said in a news release.

An opening reception will be held 6-9 p.m. Thursday, April 27.

The gallery is open noon-5 p.m. Saturdays, said gallery director Zoe Spiliotis.

La Mecha founding members from Las Cruces are Adrian Aguirre, Tauna Cole, Maggie Day, Jackie Mitchell Edwards, Eva Flynn, Sharbani das Gupta, Katrina Laine, Yashoda Latkar, Jean Wilkey and Spiliotis.

“Create Something Beautiful” “reflects each artist's work aesthetically and conceptually,” the gallery said. “Beautifully rendered visuals weave delicately through personal reflections and abhorrent societal issues, creating hope and highlighting tensions, to capture the complexity and diversity of the world around them. Create Something Beautiful also reflects our founding members' bold optimism and desire to contribute positively to the borderland region and its art community through the creation of La Mecha Contemporary.”

The artist-led gallery is “dedicated to the celebration of art and creativity that enriches artistic discussion and educates the public about the work of contemporary women and under-represented artists,” the news release said.
