Fire station dedicates public art July 13

The City of Las Cruces and the City Art Board will host a dedication ceremony for “Cloud Cover,” the public art sculpture recently installed on the exterior of Fire Station 3, 390 N. Valley Drive.

The ceremony, which is open to the public, will be held 9-10 a.m. Thursday, July 13.

“Cloud Cover” was created by artist Arturo Garcia, the city said in a news release.

“The artwork was inspired by firefighters’ commitment to their community to foster a safe environment, and the fire station as a place to seek comfort and protection,” the city said.

Abstract elements in the sculpture symbolize a ceremonial blanket with weave stitching and interpretations of cloud patterns and water referencing the region’s rich native culture, the news release said. “Cloud Cover” also depicts water sprays used by firefighters to suppress fire.

The sculpture is constructed of aluminum with powder-coated colors and is attached to the north tower of the fire station.
