First half barrage guides Aggies to victory

Posted

Another Wednesday, another Aggie victory.

New Mexico State University scored 27 unanswered points in the first half Wednesday, Oct. 11, against Sam Houston at Aggie Memorial Stadium, and that’s all the Aggies would need to seal a fourth victory for the season.

Sam Houston’s Bearkats scored twice in the second half to make the final score 27-13, Aggies.

NMSU took its first possession of the game and drove 87 yards down the field, culminating with a 22-yard touchdown run by quarterback Diego Pavia.

On the Aggies’ next possession, Pavia found wide receiver Trent Hudson downfield 10 yards beyond the nearest Bearkat. Hudson hauled in Pavia’s pass and motored untouched to the end zone, a 78-yard play.

That made the score 14-0 with 2:34 left in the first quarter, and the Aggies were in control the rest of the way.

"We still got a lot of football to be played and we'll get better," Aggie Head Coach Jerry Kill said after the game. "I tell our kids to play hard and the one thing they do is play hard."

The victory puts NMSU at 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in Conference USA.

Next up for the Aggies is another Wednesday night game, this time in El Paso for the 100th meeting of UTEP and NMSU. Game time is at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Sun Bowl.

The Miners defeated Florida International 27-14 Wednesday night on the road to improve their overall record to 2-5 and 1-2 in C-USA. FIU is the only common opponent so far for NMSU and UTEP, and both teams beat the Panthers. The Aggies defeated FIU 34-17 Oct. 4.

NMSU has just two home games left: 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, vs. Middle Tennessee, which is Homecoming; and 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, vs. Jacksonville State.
