Former Doña Ana County Commissioner Isabella Solis is a candidate for mayor of Las Cruces.
“With a vision for a more prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future for the city, Solis is committed to a plan for growth,” she said in a candidate announcement, describing herself as “a dedicated community activist.”
Solis was a county commissioner 2016-20. She ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2018 and for state representative in 2020.
“Many of the Las Cruces voters I’m speaking to know our elected officials are out of touch with the people they’re supposed to represent,” Solis said. “Everyone knows what issues our city needs to prioritize, yet politicians are doing the minimum.”
Among the seven candidates for Las Cruces mayor in the Nov. 7, 2023, election, Solis believes her “ability to provide solutions is what will make her the top choice in the race,” she said.
“We have a lot of candidates hoping to work for the people of Las Cruces, and I think that’s awesome,” Solis said. “Las Cruces deserves to hear from all of the candidates, and to vote for who they believe will best represent them. As a former county commissioner, I have always considered myself a public servant – I will continue to do so if elected as your mayor. I’m going to keep this campaign focused on the issues Las Cruces cares about. I’m sharing my solutions directly with voters.”
The city “can make history this election by electing the city’s first Latina mayor,” Solis said, adding that her campaign “is grassroots led, relying on Las Cruces residents rather than outside money and the establishment of career politicians.”
“Front and center of Solis’s plans for the city is working across the aisle to pass much needed policy,” her announcement said. Solis said she “strongly believes that the issues Las Cruces residents care about are carelessly made to be partisan issues, when in reality, people from all areas of the political spectrum want issues solved.”
Solis said her policy plans are 1) public safety, 2) infrastructure Investments and Improvements, 3) the border and Immigration, 4) sustaining the environment and 5) affordable housing.
