Free horse gelding clinic is April 10

Animal Protection New Mexico (APNM) will offer a free horse gelding clinic for owners and guardians “who may have financial difficulty in paying for the procedure,” said APNM Digital Communications Manager Russell Hawkins.

The clinic will be held Monday, April 10, at Southern New Mexico County Fairgrounds, 12125 Robert Larson Blvd., about 13 miles west of Las Cruces.

Gelding (castration) is for equines at least four months old who are healthy, have two descended testicles, are halter-trained and are accompanied by a qualified handler, APNM said, adding that gelding a colt or stallion prevents breeding and reduces aggression.

The clinic will also provide optional vaccinations and wolf teeth extraction at guardian/owner expense.

The clinic is funded by APNM’s Equine Protection Fund, which provides emergency feed assistance and select veterinary care for families with horses in New Mexico and provides “a safety net for equines across the state,” APNM said.

A total of 20 slots are available in time blocks with arrival times at 7:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

Owners/guardians are responsible for the equine’s travel to and from the clinic and for its care after the gelding, APNM said.

Owners/guardians must pre-register for the clinic by contacting Victoria Murphy at 505-803-3770 or epf@apnm.org.

APNM is a nonprofit founded in 1979 “to advocate the rights of animals by effecting systemic change, resulting in the humane treatment of all animals.”

APNM’s board of directors includes David J. Steele, Ph.D., of Las Cruces.
