Grupo Control will play ¡mira! Las Cruces

Houston-based cumbia and norteño-style band Grupo Control will headline the second annual ¡mira! Las Cruces event in April, the city announced Monday.

Last year’s festival presented a free outdoor family-friendly festival of arts, culture, cuisine and music and was headlined by country music singer Frank Ray.

The band, also known as Los Reyes de la Cumbia, was founded in the late 1990s, according to the city.

“Last year, the response we received bringing in Rodeo Norteño was the inspiration behind this year’s headliners,” Visit Las Cruces Executive Director Rochelle Miller said in a news release. “People really loved the dance lessons prior to the group hitting the stage, and the atmosphere they created really embodied the spirit of the community.”

An addition to the entertainment on hand this year will be lucha libre (Mexican-style professional wrestling) with a live DJ, in addition to local high school bands, mariachi and folklorico performance, cheer teams, animal acts and more.

The acts are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Plaza de Las Cruces, downtown, on Saturday, April 27.  Last year’s performance schedule ran until 10 p.m.

The city said it will close Main Street at 5 a.m. that day from the roundabout south, along with Las Cruces and Griggs avenue. That day’s Las Cruces Farmers and Crafts Market will be postponed to to Sunday, but vendors will also be in the plaza during the festival.
