Mayor Ken Miyagishima will celebrate his 60th birthday Monday, May 15, by presiding over a regular meeting of the Las Cruces City Council. Miyagishima has spent more than half his life in elected office. He was a member of the Doña Ana County Commission, 1993-2000, a member of Las Cruces City Council 2001-07 and was elected mayor in 2007 and re-elected in 2011, 2015 and 2019. Miyagishima was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1963. He moved with his family to Las Cruces in 1971. Miyagishima attended Conlee Elementary School and Lynn Junior High School and graduated from Las Cruces High School. The mayor has a bachelor of business administration degree from New Mexico State University and an MBA from the University of Texas at El Paso.
