Interstate overpass open at last

Posted

The long-awaited reopening of the overpass connecting Interstate 10 to Interstate 25 in Las Cruces has finally come.

With repairs complete and the bridge deemed safe to use, the overpass was reopened to traffic at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the state Department of Transportation announced.

The ramp, providing access to I-25 northbound from I-10 eastbound, had been closed since a July 11 fire that damaged the bridge. A commercial fuel tanker caught fire that night after a rollover crash that did not involve other vehicles and caused no reported injuries. The driver of the truck escaped unharmed.

Engineers inspecting the bridge after the accident said the bridge’s structural integrity was intact, but the ramp and roadway required repairs initially estimated at approximately $1 million. The DOT initially aimed to have the bridge open in October, but the work was delayed.

More information from the DOT on road conditions is available online at NMRoads.com or by calling 511.
