Jazz and Blues Society awards six scholarships

Posted

The Mesilla Valley Jazz and Blues Society (MVJBS) recently awarded six jazz scholarships to students attending New Mexico State University next fall, MVJBS said in a news release.

William Reeves, Caleb Garay, Javier Garcia, Irak Rodriguez, Silas Manges and Enrique Martinez were the recipients.

“Irak, Silas and Enrique, who are graduating from Las Cruces area high schools, received $500 from the society and will receive a matching scholarship from NMSU Bands,” MVJBS President Frank “Pancho” Romero said. “This gives each student $1,000 to be used toward educational needs.”

MVJBS is a nonprofit that promotes jazz, blues and jazz education in the Mesilla Valley, Romero said. It sponsors a monthly Jazz Jam at Mom’s Coffee, 1001 E. University Ave., and a monthly meeting/concert at 7 p.m. every third Sunday at the Fountain Theater, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe in Mesilla, or the First Christian Church, 1809 El Paseo Road in Las Cruces.
