The city announced Monday that the Las Cruces Police Department’s interim chief, Jeremy Story, would assume the job permanently effective Dec. 17.

Story succeeds retired Chief Miguel Domingez and was appointed as the interim chief on July 1. He had also been named deputy chief of operations since 2022. A 2007 valedictorian academy graduate, serving as a Lieutenant since 2018, Story had overseen the department’s traffic unit, SWAT team, gang unit and the training academy. He also commanded the LCPD Honor Guard. He holds a degree in criminal justice from New Mexico State University and previously served as a non-commissioned offer in the Marine Corps.

In a new release, Story stated, “I am humbled by the opportunity to lead the Las Cruces Police Department. I have seen so much growth in our staff over the past few years, and we are more committed than ever to continue that progress. These men and women do amazing work every day. We look forward to finding ways to highlight our positive interactions with the public and build even stronger connections. We also look forward to objectively evaluating what we do and finding creative ways to improve the community we are all a part of.”

City Manager Ifo Pili cited Story’s “outstanding leadership, extensive experience and commitment to excellence” as attributes that led to his selection.
