Las Cruces Chile Drop nominated as one of the best New Year’s Eve events

The Las Cruces Chile Drop is among 20 New Year's Eve drops that have been nominated by travel editors as the best in the United States, the City of Las Cruces said in a news release.

Las Cruces residents are encouraged to vote for the Chile Drop, through a Reader’s Choice 2023 contest conducted by USA Today. Votes can be cast at www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-new-years-eve-drop-2023.

Residents and Chile Drop fans can vote for the event once per day for four weeks until 10 a.m. MST Monday, Dec.  4. The 10 events getting the most votes will be announced Friday, Dec. 15.

In early voting that began Nov. 6, the Las Cruces Chile Drop ranked fifth among the 20 events nominated, the city said.

Each event offers its own spin on the occasion with unique items being lowered. In Las Cruces, that’s either an illuminated red or green chile. Las Cruces Chile Drop is funded through the City’s Economic Development Department.

USA Today’s expert panel selected the Las Cruces Chile Drop as a contender for its 10 Best Readers’ Choice travel awards. Prior competitions have been hotly contested, and Las Cruces can rock the vote in the community through social media.

Voters should note the rules do not allow offering prizes or other inducements to the public in exchange for votes during the voting period.
