The Las Cruces Fire Department has been awarded a federal fire prevention and safety grant through FEMA in the amount of $46,076 to provide smoke alarm installations and home fire safety education, the City of Las Cruces said in a news release. With a 5 percent required match from the city, a total of $48,380 will be available through August 2022 to install smoke alarms in high fire risk, impoverished communities, primarily in Las Cruces fire department Districts 1, 2 and 3, the city said.
As allowed by the grant terms, the fire department will manage the installation of smoke alarms in up to 180 homes within Las Cruces City limits where the residents are willing to receive on-site fire safety education during the installation. Las Cruces firefighters will provide the installation and education, which will be focused toward impoverished homes in need of working smoke alarms as part of the grant award terms, the city said.
The fire department began accepting referrals Dec. 1. These home visits and installations are expected to begin just after Jan. 1, 2022.
