LCHS vs. La Cueva for shot at finals

The Las Cruces High School Bulldawgs are headed to the state semifinals in the Class 6A state football playoffs.

They’ll play La Cueva High School (8-3) 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at Wilson Stadium in Albuquerque.

The Bulldawgs (7-5), seeded 7th in the playoffs, defeated No. 2 seed Centennial High School Friday, Nov. 10, at the Field of Dreams 38-34 to earn the right to go to the semifinals. La Cueva, seeded No. 3, defeated Farmington 45-6 Nov. 10, in the quarterfinals to advance.

La Cueva is currently ranked 4th in the state overall, with Las Cruces ranked 5th. The two teams have played four common opponents this season. Both lost to Cleveland High School; both beat Los Lunas; LA Cueva beat Volcano Vista and LCHS lost to Volcano Vista; La Cueva lost to Centennial and LCHS both beat and lost to Cleveland.

The winner of the game will play the winner of No. 1 ranked and No. 1 seeded and defending state champion Cleveland and Rio Rancho High School, who also play Friday.

Mayfield High School defeated Gadsden 13-12 Nov. 3 before getting shut out 50-0 in the Class 5A playoffs. The Trojans finish the season at 5-7.

Centennial finishes the season at 7-3.
