Posted

Branigan Cultural Center (BCC), 501 N. Main St., will host at a lecture at noon Thursday, Aug. 17, inspired by The Chinese Experience in the Borderlands, 1880-1930 exhibit currently on display at BCC.

You can attend the lecture in person or via Zoom. For the Zoom link, email Lori Cole at education@lascruces.gov.

Anna Fahy will give an overview of the historical background of the Chinese who arrived in and made the Borderlands their home, the City of Las Cruces said in a news release.

“It will reveal many of the trials and tribulations they experienced and overcame. El Paso and surrounding regions in New Mexico, Arizona and Mexico, show evidence of this history that has contributed greatly to our Borderland communities, both historically and in the present,” the city said.

Fahy is an alumnus of Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas and UTEP.  She holds bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and English and master’s degrees in history and sociology. Her publications appear in state archeology reports and with the ProQuest Company. Fahy has made public presentations on Asian studies at the Southwest Regional Workshop for The University of Hawaii and UTEP, El Paso County Historical Commission, the Genealogical Society of El Paso El Paso Museum of History and other organizations.

Fahy has been a guest on the television program Mature Living and co-hosted We Celebrate Our Heritage, the Chinese of El Paso, by the Museums and Cultural Affairs Department of the City of El Paso with Chief Justice David Wellington Chew. Fahy wrote the justification paper for the state historical marker on El Paso’s historic Chinese community and co-authored the marker for The Historical Chinese Community of El Paso in downtown El Paso.

Fahy has retired from teaching history and sociology with El Paso Community College and continues to research Chinese history in the Borderlands.

BCC is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1.
