Local author to sign books at Barnes & Noble, COAS

Las Cruces author Charmayne Samuelson will sign and sell copies of her new book “Spencer MacCallum: Memories – Mystique – Mata Ortiz,” 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Barnes & Noble in Mesila Valley Mall, 700 S. Telshor Blvd.

Samuelson will also sign books 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Nov. 18, at COAS Books, 317 N. Main St., during the Farmers and Crafts Market of Las Cruces.

“If you know about or own any Mata Ortiz pottery, you will want to read this fascinating story of how it all began,” Samuelson said in a news release. “From childhood, each step of Spencer McCallum’s life seemed destined to take him to Juan Quezada and Mata Ortiz. His natural curiosity at a young age of discovering ancient relics continued with him trekking across Mexico to find one single potter, Juan Quezada, and propelling him onto the world stage as an unlikely superstar artist.”

Including “Spencer McCallum,” Samuelson is the author of eight books spanning seven genres: a Southwest mystery novel, a self-help book with explanations and techniques of self-hypnosis, stories for spiritual seekers, four story coloring books featuring Southwest Desert Animals, a color photography book of the wild mustangs of the Onaqui Mountains and now a biography.

Samuelson was invited to book signings in Mata Ortiz, Mexico, earlier this month, during a gathering of Mata Ortiz gallery owners, bookstores, etc., she said. She will also sign books 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Nov. 25-26, during Mata Ortiz pottery demonstrations and sales at Amerind Museum in Dragoon, Arizona; and at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, at Verde Valley Archaeology Center and Museum in Camp Verde, Arizona. The Dec. 9 event will include a slideshow presentation and talk and the sale of Mata Ortiz pottery.
