MAYFIELD HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Mayfield drops a notch in football

Posted

The Mayfield High School football program has been dropped in class from 6A to 5A by the board of directors of the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA).

The action was taken after “a comprehensive review of member school enrollment numbers is undertaken to determine classification and alignment for all sports,” as stated in NMAA bylaws.

Football, which is the only sport statewide to have a 6A classification, is the lone program to be reclassified at Mayfield. The school is still 5A – the top designation – in the other 13 sports in which NMAA member schools participate.

Mayfield joins 5A District 3 football teams from Chaparral, Deming and Santa Teresa high schools.

Meanwhile, Centennial, Las Cruces and Oñate remain in 6A District 3/4 football with Carlsbad, Gadsden and Hobbs.
