Mayor to order masks during voting at city hall

Posted

At a special Las Cruces City Council meeting on Friday, May 8, Mayor Ken Miyagishima said he will issue an emergency proclamation mandating that people coming to vote early at Las Cruces City Hall wear a face mask to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Early in-person primary election voting has been underway since May 5 at the Doña Ana County Government Building, and will begin Saturday, May 16, at city hall and other locations in Las Cruces and throughout the county. The mayor’s emergency proclamation would affect voting only at city hall.

The mayor said the proclamation would be effective beginning May 16. Under city ordinance, an emergency proclamation is effective for three days, but can be extended for additional three-day periods by votes of the city council.

“This is about safety,” Miyagishima said. He said the action is not intended to disenfranchise any voter. “I have to put the public’s health first and our city employees as well,” he said.

The council passed an ordinance in March that grants the mayor and mayor pro-tem the authority to issue an emergency proclamation under certain specific circumstances.
