Memorial Day ceremony remembers the fallen

Posted

The Military Order of the Purple Heart, Mesilla Valley Chapter No. 2004, is seeking candle sponsors for the annual ceremony May 29.

Along with Mesilla Valley Hospice, the United Women of the Southwest, American Legion Post 10 and the Girl Scouts of Las Cruces, the Military Order of the Purple Heart will again this year continue the efforts of the Veterans Memorial Wall Committee, hosting the annual candlelight ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in Las Cruces.

The 10th annual candlelight ceremony is a solemn event co-sponsored by the City of Las Cruces to commemorate the 204 members of the armed forces from Doña Ana County listed on the Veterans Wall as killed in action from World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraq/Afghanistan.

Family members will continue to receive priority to light a candle for the fallen, but Purple Heart needs additional individuals to participate. There is no cost involved, but volunteer candle sponsors must attend the ceremony and light the candles as called.

The event will be at 8 p.m. Monday, May 29. Those interested in volunteering can contact Rod Gajewski at 575-644-1045 or beanrod@beanrod.com. Sponsors need to register before May 15.
