Emme Apodaca, a sixth grader at Mesilla Valley Leadership Academy, won the Optimist Club of Las Cruces essay contest based on the theme “Who is an everyday hero that brings out the optimism in you?”

Emme received a medallion from the local club, and received a $2,500 college scholarship for because she also won the essay contest at the district level, the club said.

“Emme did a wonderful job of articulating this year’s theme,” said Las Cruces Optimist Club president Len Hampton. “Emme expressed herself well through the essay and deserved the honor of first place.”

The Optimist Club of Las Cruces has been participating in the Optimist Essay Contest for 60 years and has been active in the community since 1961, according to a club news release. Other programs and service projects the club is involved in include the Bob Ogas Baseball All-Star Classic, Tour de Optimism, Respect for Law, Boys and Girls Club and Shop With a Cop.
