Music director and conductor Jorge Martinez-Rios will lead The New Horizons Symphony (NHS) in a free concert beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, at Atkinson Recital Hall, New Mexico State University Department of Music, 1075 N. Horseshoe St. on the NMSU campus, NHS said in a news release.

The concert will feature Romanian-born cellist Mihai Marica performing the Hayden Cello Concerto No.1 and NMSU student April Gurrola performing the first movement of the Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5 (Allegro), Russian Sailor’s Dance by Gliere and the Bacchanale from “Samson and Delilah” by Saint-Saens.

Marica is a first-prize winner of the “Dr. Luis Sigall” International Competition and the Irving M. Klein International Competition and is a recipient of Charlotte White’s Salon de Virtuosi Fellowship grant. He has performed with orchestras such as the Symphony Orchestra of Chile, Xalapa Symphony in Mexico, the Hermitage State Orchestra of St. Petersburg in Russia, the Jardins Musicaux Festival Orchestra in Switzerland, the Louisville Orchestra and the Santa Cruz Symphony in the United States. Marica has also appeared in numerous recital performances around the world.

A dedicated chamber musician, Marica has performed at the Chamber Music Northwest, Norfolk and Aspen music festivals where he has collaborated with such artists as Ani Kavafian, Ida Kavafian, David Shifrin, André Watts and Edgar Meyer. He was a founding member of the award-winning Amphion String Quartet and is currently the cellist of the acclaimed Apollo Trio. He studied with Gabriela Todor in his native Romania and with Aldo Parisot at the Yale School of Music where he was awarded master's and artist diploma degrees. Marica is an alum of The Bowers Program sponsored by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

Gurrola will be making her solo debut with NHS.  A graduate of Centennial High School, she is a senior music major at NMSU studying with Professor Daniel Vega-Albela. While at NMSU, Gurrola has performed in festivals in Aruba and Louisiana. She plays with the NHS, Roswell Symphony and the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra. In 2021, she was selected to move onto the final round of the Jackie McGehee Young Artist's Competition sponsored by the Music Guild of New Mexico.

NHS 2021-22 season also includes a final concert Sunday, May 22.

The nonprofit New Horizons Symphony at New Mexico State University is a member of the New Horizons International Music Association. The group provides opportunities for adults to either return to their musical roots or explore their artistic side for the first time. NHS was started in 2003 and is now in its 18th season.

NHS is currently seeking musicians to join the orchestra, specifically cello, violin and percussion players.

Membership dues are $50 for the school year.

Rehearsals are 7-9 p.m. Thursdays in the band room at the NMSU Department of Music.
