MASK MANDATE

NMSU, DACC, county require masks indoors

Posted

New Mexico State University and Doña Ana Community College both are requiring that masks be worn at indoor locations, NMSU and DACC said in news releases. The mask requirements began at both institutions Aug. 2.

Doña Ana County Manager Fernando Macias issued a similar mandate that became effective Aug. 4. It requires that “all visitors inside county buildings and facilities are required to wear a face covering,” the county said in a news release.

The updated indoor mask requirement applies to all NMSU classrooms, labs, meeting rooms, vehicles and other spaces, and to all faculty, staff, students and visitors to NMSU campuses and offices, regardless of vaccination status, NMSU said in a news release. In addition, unvaccinated people must continue to wear masks indoors at all times.

NMSU System Vice Chancellor Ruth A. Johnston, who also serves as the university system’s chief Covid-19 officer, said masks will be required at all indoor NMSU system locations and offices around the state when it is not possible to maintain six feet between individuals.

The policy change was made in response to recent guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and recommendations by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.

Affected NMSU system locations include the Las Cruces, Doña Ana Community College, Alamogordo, Grants, and Carlsbad campuses as well as New Mexico Department of Agriculture and Cooperative Extension Service offices and Agricultural Science Centers around the state.

In a separate news release, DACC said it will require masks in all indoor locations and offices where social distancing (six feet) is not possible.

The City of Las Cruces is requiring face masks and social distancing at City Hall for people who are not vaccinated.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an executive order July 29 requiring all state employees to either be fully vaccinated or otherwise submit to regular COVID-19 testing.
