NM State Athletics has announced its decision to part ways with Head Baseball Coach Mike Kirby amid his fourth season with the program.
In three-plus years at the helm, Kirby led the Aggie baseball team to a record of 56-79, including a 2022 WAC Tournament Championship which led to the program's fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The decision comes on the heels of an 0-7 start to the season – marking the Aggies' slowest start since 2015 when NM State opened the year with eight losses.
"We would like to thank Coach Kirby for his hard work and dedication during his time at New Mexico State, however, we feel as though the trajectory of the program needed to be changed," stated Director of Athletics Mario Moccia. "We feel this change is in the best interest of the program and it will allow us to focus on the remainder of the season.
"Assistant Coach Keith Zuniga has been appointed to the role of interim head coach. We are confident that Coach Zuniga will lead the team effectively during this transitional period."
