New Mexico State University settled two lawsuits with two former administrators totaling about $500,000.
The two lawsuits alleged that NMSU leadership fired administrators who raised concerns about questionable practices during the end of Dan Arvizu's chancellorship.
Carol Parker, who served as NMSU’s provost from 2019 to 2021, settled her lawsuit with NMSU for $445,000. Parker alleged that administrators fashioned unpopular policies and used her as a scapegoat after she began investigating allegations of racist and sexist pay disparities.
Laura Castille, former executive director of the Office of Institutional Equality and Title IX coordinator, alleged that former NMSU Vice Chancellor Ruth Johnston moved to ensure that a "close ally of hers" would become the chief audit officer.
When Castille raised the issue, she said Arvizu refused to evaluate Johnston's conduct and forced Castille to resign in August 2022. Castille agreed to settle for $60,000.
