LAS CRUCES - “We took a popular design and gave it a refreshed look with a shirt from one of our manufacturers,” says Chris Lang, Organ Mountain Outfitters owner. “We are now offering Eco-Tees, manufactured with 60 percent organic cotton and 40 percent recycled plastic bottles … with zero dye usage and zero water."
By offering products made from recycled materials, Organ Mountain Outfitters, 535 N. Main St., helps close the loop in recycling.
The Rio Grande Recycling Corridor – pulling together a powerful 2 million residents from Las Cruces, El Paso, Albuquerque and Santa Fe – salutes this zero-waste sustainability effort.
Lang explains more: "The clothing industry overall has had a negative impact on our environment from the use of dye mixes, water usage, and fabric waste. As we move forward, we are looking at sourcing from eco-friendly American companies that have a higher standard of quality and an overall lower environmental impact."
More than 60 million plastic water bottles are thrown away - not recycled - every year in the U.S., according to the Container Recycling Institute. With the tiniest bit of extra effort, they could have been placed in a blue bin and gone on to a new life, possibly as a shirt! Better than wasting away in our landfills or trashing our desert.
Lang says, “As Organ Mountain Outfitters has grown within the community, we have been studying our environmental impact and how we can improve as a company.”
The South-Central Solid Waste Authority (SCSWA) supports local businesses incorporating zero-waste efforts and offering new products made from recycled materials.
“Plenty of companies are now investigating how to integrate recycled plastics into their products,” said Patrick Peck, SCSWA director. “It’s great to see a local company closing the recycling loop and offering new goods made with repurposed, recycled materials.”
Lang adds, "At Organ Mountain Outfitters, we are really excited about the future in how we can source better products for a better world."
