Patients from other states can now medicate in N.M.

Medical cannabis patients from other states are now allowed to use their cards in New Mexico, but cannabis products are not allowed to cross state lines.

The new rule has created opportunity for questionable activity and a bit of confusion.

Resident of other states with medical cannabis programs can now visit New Mexico dispensaries to purchase medicine, so long as they bring a state medical cannabis program card, along with a New Mexico driver’s license or official identification card. All information must match on all documents.

In other words, you cannot live in Texas and show a California medical card. If you have a California card, you must show proof of residency in California.

Evidently, there are online sites attempting to circumvent the rules and are offering California cards to residents of other states for a fee. New Mexico’s Department of Health does not approve of these cards and is monitoring for compliance.

If a New Mexico dispensary sells medicine to someone who is not a legitimate patient, the dispensary may risk losing its license to dispense cannabis.

Illegal activities can undermine New Mexico’s medical cannabis program, which has undergone many changes and improvements since 2007.

It is now possible for more legitimate New Mexico residents to acquire a card. If you need a card, obtain it legally.
