Long-time Las Cruces mental health advocate Micah Pearson has been chosen as the new executive director of the nonprofit Southern New Mexico chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the organization announced. The appointment was effective Jan. 15.

“Pearson has a long history with NAMI, first taking a peer-to-peer class in 2008 before becoming a member and volunteer with what was then known as NAMI Doña Ana County in 2012,” the NAMI-SNM announcement said. “Since that time, he's served on the affiliate board in a variety of different roles, including president, 2017-2020.” Pearson also is a national NAMI board member.

“We couldn’t be more grateful to have a director who’s shown through time-worn efforts to see our community become more enriched with classes and resources that will give us a brighter and more-supported community,” said NAMI-SNM Board of Directors member Liz Liano.

NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
