Las Crucen Robbie Tafoya wanted to make sure incumbent Doña Ana County Commissioner in District 4 Wayne Hancock had competition in June's Democrat primary.
Soon after he filed in March to seek the seat, though, Tafoya said he discovered he was pleased with the other Democrat candidates who were also in the race, so he withdrew his name.
“I just wanted to make sure he had some competition,” Tafoya said.
David Bonnor and Isabela Solis are also seeking the Democratic nomination.
Early voting began Tuesday, May 10. Primary election day for Democrats and Republicans is Tuesday, June 7.
The county clerk’s office said Tafoya withdrew early enough so his name will not appear on the ballot.
Tafoya said one of the reasons he originally filed to try and unseat Hancock is because of a dearth of fire hydrants in the Navajo Trail area where he lives. He believes the issue was not receiving enough attention.
