Salvation Army plans holiday projects

Posted

Salvation Army of Las Cruces has several events and projects planned ahead the holidays geared toward helping children and families in need have a brighter Christmas season.

Angel Tree program

Donations to the Angel Tree program provide the Christmas gifts the Salvation Army collects and donates to families that signed up for Christmas assistance.

Each tag on the Salvation Army tree at locations throughout the community has the gift requests of a child that was signed up for assistance. Tree locations include Old Navy, Mesilla Valley Mall, Walmart, Sam’s Club, Farmers Insurance, Rudy’s Bar-B-Que, Rehab Hospital of Southern New Mexico and White Sands Credit Union.

Toy distribution is Dec. 18-24.

Harvest Festival

The Salvation Army’s eighth annual Harvest Festival is 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Salvation Army headquarters, 1590 California Ave.

The event will include live music, food, games, a bounce house, an obstacle course, a zip line, a rock-climbing wall and giveaways for kids.

Trunk O’ Treat

The Salvation Army’s 2023 Trunk or Treat, “a safe place for kids to trick or treat,” will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, at Rudy’s Bar-B-Q, 1020 N. Telshor Blvd.

The Salvation Army is partnering with Rudy’s Bar-B-Que, Planet Fitness and The Las Cruces Cruising Council on Trunk O’ Treat.

Christmas toy drive

The Salvation Army of Las Cruces’ sixth annual Christmas Toy Drive is Saturday, Dec. 2, in the old Kmart parking lot on Bataan Memorial West Highway. Vehicles will gather in the parking lot beginning at 10:30 a.m., and, with a Las Cruces Police Department escort, the group cruise starting at 11:30 a.m., traveling west on U.S. Highway 70 to north Main Street, Lohman Avenue and Telshor Boulevard to end at Rudy’s Bar-B-Q, 1020 N. Telshor Blvd.

Each participating vehicle is requested to donate two gifts for children, one for a boy and one for a girl, each with a minimum value of $10. The gifts will be included in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program.

The Salvation Army usually has 100-150 vehicles participating in the cruise, Evans said, but expects 200 this year. Every type of vehicle is welcome. Participants will include local car clubs with lowriders, sport cars, exotic cars, side-by-sides, trucks, motorcycles and other types of vehicles, Evans said.
