SAR recognizes community members for their service

The Gadsden Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) presented community service awards and a military service medal.

The community service awards were presented to U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. (Ret.) Robert M. “Bobby” Jakcsy and Rev. Dr. Norm Story. The military service medal was presented to U.S. Navy Cmdr. (Ret.) Roger A. Dombrowski.

After retiring from the Air Force, Jakcsy worked for several defense contractors and also has worked as a Doña Ana County deputy sheriff, SAR Gadsden Chapter President Don Williams said in a news release.

“Jakcsy has served his church and is a firm believer and supporter of the Constitution of the United States,” Williams said. “He has been recognized for proudly flying the American flag at his home.  Bobby’s continued service to his nation, state and Las Cruces has resulted in him being a ride captain in the Patriot Guard. He always ensures that the deceased veterans and their families are given the respect and thanks that they have earned with their lives of service to the United States of America. Jakcsy has led by example and forever touched lives as only a veteran with a shared life of service can understand.”

Story has been the pastor of several churches in the eastern U.S. before arriving in Las Cruces in 2003 to serve the First Presbyterian Church, Williams said. Story also serves on the board of directors of Mesilla Valley Hospice.

“(Story) is a firm believer in the Constitution and in America,” Williams said. “Story has a heart for veterans and served many in the local hospitals. His compassion and empathy has touched so many lives and made a difference for generations of families.”

Dombrowski was inducted into the SAR Gadsden Chapter during a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in Las Cruces, Williams said. Following the induction, he was presented with SAR military service medal to honor his service in the U.S. Naval Reserve.
