Oñate High School Principal Jim Schapekahm, shown here handing out a diploma at the May 22 drive-through graduation ceremony, has been named 2020 New Mexico Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Schapekahm has been with Las Cruces Public Schools since 2004. He started his career as an athletic trainer, working his way up to becoming assistant principal at OHS. He was named principal in 2015. Schapekahm says he is most inspired by the unity of his students and how they always find a way to persevere.
