Centennial High School will host Las Cruces Public Schools’ Poesía a Viva voz Edition 2022-23 (Spanish Recital Poetry Competition) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the CHS theatre, 1950 S. Sonoma Ranch Blvd.

The event is free and open to the public.

Participating LCPS middle and high school students will recite poems they have memorized that were written in Spanish by important Hispanic poets from Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba, Spain, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Puerto Rico and Columbia, including Pablo Neruda and Federico Garcia Lorca, said CHS Spanish teacher Maricela Stern, who is coordinating the competition. The middle school coordinator is Picacho Middle School bilingual teacher Thelma Kapernick.

“This Recital is our way of joining the World’s Day Poetry celebration,” Stern and Kapernick said. “It is also a great opportunity for our youth to demonstrate their abilities on the stage by interpreting the magic words conveyed in poetry from well-known poets of the Spanish speaking countries and Hispanic American authors.”
