Science Museum activities in May

The Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science (MONAS) free programing for children and families in May includes volcanos, live animal feedings, screen printing, fossils and insects. No registration is required for any of the events.

Here are the programs at MONAS, 411 N. Main St. downtown:

  • “Nature & Science Discovery PreK,” 10 a.m. Thursdays, May 4, 11, 18 and 25: Investigate dinosaurs through hands-on explorations, stories and crafts. For ages 2-5 with an adult caregiver.
  • “Saturday Science – Volcanoes,” 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, May 6: Learn about the volcanoes in and around Las Cruces and experiment with chemical reactions to make your own eruption. For ages 6 and up with an adult caregiver.
  • “Live Animal Feedings,” 11 a.m. Saturdays, May 6 and 13: Turtles are publicly fed May 6 and snakes are publicly fed May 13. For all ages.
  • “Teen Takeover: Screen Printing,” 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10: Ages 13-17 can play with the exhibits, make and experiment with S.T.E.A.M. activities, eat snacks and play games during these extended hours just for teens. They also will learn to screen print and make a one-of-a-kind poster.
  • “FOSSILS!” 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday, May 20: Explore the 3.5-billion-year odyssey of life with a geologist and real fossil specimens and learn about prehistoric seashells. For all ages.
  • “Teen Science Café: Insect Pinning,” 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 23: Students ages 11-17 are invited to have dinner with museum staff and learn about natural history collections. Participants will learn to pin insect specimens and take home their own pinned butterfly. Dinner and activity supplies are included.
  • “STEAMpunk – Spaghetti Bridges,” 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27: Erika Anderson is a reliability engineer who helps keep people safe by making sure equipment is working correctly and people are using it the right way. Inspired by her work, participants will build and test bridges made from spaghetti noodles. For ages 6 and older.
  • “Animal Encounters: Bobcats.” 11 a.m.-noon, Saturday, May 27. Learn about this resident of the Chihuahuan Desert. For all ages.

MONAS is accessible from RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1 Stop 1.
