Science Museum STEM activities include fossils, clocks, javelinas

The Las Cruces Museum of Nature and Science (MONAS), 411 N. Main St., will offer free programs for children and families this July that include designing a game controller, watching live animal feedings, designing clocks and learning about javelinas.

Admission to the museum and programs is free. No registration is required for any of the events.

  • Saturday, July 1, 10 a.m.: “Saturday Science – Makey Makey™ Lab.” Design your own game controller with everyday materials. Recommended for ages 6 and older with an adult caregiver.
  • Saturdays, July 1 and 8, 11 a.m.: “Live Animal Feedings.” Turtles are fed July 1; Snakes are fed July 8.
  • Thursdays, July 6, 13, 20 and 27, 10 a.m.: “Nature & Science Discovery PreK.” Investigate water through hands-on explorations, stories and crafts. For ages 2 to 5 with an adult caregiver.
  • Saturday, July 15, 9 a.m.: “FOSSILS!” Explore the 3.5-billion-year odyssey of life with a geologist and real fossil specimens. Learn about sea stars and sea urchins that lived millions of years ago.
  • Saturday, July 22, 11 a.m.: “STEAMpunk – Creative Clocks.” Learn about astronomer and inventor Benjamin Banneker. Inspired by his development of the first fully functioning clock, participants will design creative clocks. Recommended for ages 6 and older.
  • Saturday, July 22, 11 a.m.: "Animal Encounters – Javelinas." Learn about this resident of the Chihuahuan Desert.

MONAS is accessible via RoadRUNNER Transit Route 1, Stop 1.
