‘Siblings’ bring sneak preview

Posted

El Paso Pro-Musica (EPPM) will present a sneak peek of its "Summerfest '23" series at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Hotel Encanto, 705 S. Telshor Blvd. in Las Cruces.

The special “sneak peek” performance, "Sibling Rivalry," will feature violinist Helen Kim and her brother, pianist Michael Kim, and violinist Allison Bailey and her brother, Grammy-winning cellist Zuill Bailey.

The musicians are all family friends, having performed together in concerts throughout the world, said Felipa Solis, executive director of EPPM.

There is no charge to attend the concert, but EPPM is asking for donations at the door for its educational outreach and community engagement program.

"What a thrill to perform alongside my amazing sister, violinist and educator Allison Bailey, and our good friends, Helen and Michael,” said Bailey, EPPM artistic director. “We will give Las Cruces a taste of dueling duos and trios and amazing musical excitement."

The Kim family grew up in Canada, where Helen made her orchestral debut with the Calgary Philharmonic at age 6. Michael made his professional debut with the Calgary Philharmonic at age 11. Along with performing as a concert pianist, Michael is also dean of the Don Wright Faculty of Music at Western University, London, Ontario. Helen most recently performed alongside Bailey and the El Paso Symphony Orchestra and EPPM. She is a member of the music faculty at Kennesaw University.

The Bailey family grew up in Virginia surrounded by music, Solis said. Their mom was a renowned pianist and music instructor, and their father was a popular band director and clarinetist who encouraged the children's musical growth and development.

Allison is orchestra director for the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax, Virginia, and serves as assistant concertmaster for the orchestras in Fairfax and Alexandria, Virginia. Zuill has served as EPPM artistic director for 21 years and regularly performs in concert.

The Kims and Baileys will perform the full “Sibling Rivalry” in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at UTEP's Fox Fine Arts Recital Hall in El Paso. Tickets are $25 and are available at eppm.org.
