Smells like green spirit: Hatch Chile Festival marks 51st year

Posted

Our license plates say “Chile Capital of the World,” and we know the epicenter of the capital is Hatch, New Mexico.

Friday, Sept. 1, through Sunday, Sept. 3, Hatch will celebrate the harvest of the green goodness with its 51st Chile Festival.

This year, there’s a special treat, the premiere of a motion picture: “The Heart of the Hatch Valley,” which will be shown four times Saturday, Sept. 2 (11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.), and twice Sunday, Sept. 3 (11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.), at the Hatch Valley High School Auditorium, 170 E. Herrera Road in Hatch.

The high school’s pecan orchard will host events and music Saturday and Sunday, starting with the 9 a.m. Saturday parade followed by opening ceremonies. Sunday’s events start at noon. Activities include a watermelon and chile eating contest, magician Jamie O’Hara and plenty of food and craft vendors.

Friday, Sept. 1, things start rolling at 4 p.m. at IceBox Brewery Yard, with live music throughout the evening for $10 a day. Saturday, IceBox Brewery Yard music kicks off at 1 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Carnival lasts all three days until 10 p.m. in the space behind Village Market Grocery Store at 418. W. Hall St.

And don’t forget the real stars of the show, the green chiles themselves, including such varieties as Numex Big Jim, Numex Ms. Junie, Barker and Numex Sandia, sold at vendors throughout Hatch.
