New Mexico State Rep. Doreen Gallegos of Las Cruces announced she will be a candidate for re-election in the June 7 Democratic primary.

Gallegos, a Democrat who represents District 52, is the House majority whip, and the highest-ranking member of the House leadership from southern New Mexico. She was first elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020.

In a campaign news release, Gallegos said she is proud of her record of accomplishments for District 52, which includes Anthony, Vado, Berino, Mesquite, the Las Alturas and Talavera areas and parts of Las Cruces and New Mexico State University.

"I was the sponsor of the Early Childhood Education Trust Fund in 2020, which will guarantee that all New Mexico children are trust fund babies,” Gallegos said. “That fund is now in the billions of dollars for New Mexico kids.”

Gallegos said she also sponsored the child income tax credit that was part of the tax package passed by the 2022 legislature.

Gallegos said she also “passed a licensure overhaul bill that will make it easier for professionals ranging from doctors and nurses to engineers and cosmetologists to practice in New Mexico. I have been a champion of Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine and passed the dental therapist act which opened many new doors for dental health care for all New Mexicans.”

Gallegos said she was also “proud to sponsor the Small Business Tax Holiday, which gives a tax break to New Mexicans and local, small businesses.”

"I have brought millions of dollars for capital outlay projects in District 52," Gallegos said, adding that she “is working with the City of Anthony on building a multi-generational center” in Anthony, New Mexico.

Gallegos said she also has “delivered capital outlay dollars for projects in Talavera, Mesquite, Vado and Berino; infrastructure projects at NMSU; and water and wastewater projects, road and recreation projects plus public safety dollars to the City of Anthony and in Las Cruces.”

Gallegos is the longtime executive director of Mesilla Valley Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program. She lives with her husband and son in Las Alturas.

Gallegos has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from NMSU. She was named NMSU Social Work Alumnus of the Year in 2014.

“I pride myself in fighting for District 52, whether it’s for our fair share of capital outlay dollars or by bringing my constituents’ voices to the leadership table of the legislature,” Gallegos said. “My work is to improve the lives of families and children in District 52, southern New Mexico and throughout the state."
