State sees highest job numbers ever

New Mexico’s economy “delivered exceptionally strong job growth in May and, along with falling unemployment levels, the state is now seeing the highest number of jobs in its history,” the office of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a news release.

New Mexico added 20,900 jobs over the year in May 2023, according to state Department of Workforce Solutions data released June 16. The increase brings the total number of jobs in New Mexico to 869,400, the highest ever, and follows four strong months of gains, the governor’s office said. New Mexico’s unemployment rate is currently 3.5 percent, which is below the national unemployment rate of 3.7 percent as calculated by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Many of the job gains since Lujan Grisham became governor in 2019 “are in key, higher-paying sectors,” the news release said, include a 21 percent increase in transportation and warehousing jobs (5,322), a 12 percent increase in professional, scientific and technical services jobs (7,194 jobs), a 5.9 percent increase in construction jobs (3,022), a 5.6 percent increase in manufacturing jobs (1,541) and a 1.6 percent increase in healthcare and social assistance jobs (2,269).
