Sweetpea, a Sulcata aka African spur-thighed tortoise, is one Las Cruces resident who is not fond of cold. While Sweatpea is 24 years old, he is but a child in Sulcata years. The breed is the third largest in the world with an average lifespan of 100-120 years. If you are lucky, you might meet him and his human, Elaine “Turtle” Martinez, on their evening walk through the neighborhood.
