Tents to Rents raising funds: Johnny’s story

Posted

Editor’s note: This is another in a series about residents of the Mesilla Valley Community of Hope’s Camp Hope tent city and the 2023 Tents to Rents fundraising campaign, as

Mesilla Valley Community of Hope (MVCH) raises funds to support Camp Hope, helping to move camp residents into their own apartments.

Johnny is grateful for the security and support he has found at Camp Hope. At the camp he can take a shower whenever he likes, has access to laundry facilities, is able to get two meals per day at the soup kitchen and can sleep soundly knowing he is safe.

Compared with living on the streets, Johnny said being in the camp is living, not just existing.

He has found his fellow camp residents to be good people, and the staff are helping him to apply for SSI and food stamps, so he has options for his future.

Johnny completed one semester of college, studying business management, and would like to find work doing roofing or landscaping. He is not afraid of hard, physical work.
