Thousands walking and biking to school as International Walk to School Day Celebrations continue

Posted

By mid-October, thousands of Las Cruces Public Schools students, staff, parents and visitors will have participated in International Walk to School Day celebrations at all 25 LCPS elementary schools.

LCPS is the only school district in New Mexico will all its elementary schools participating in the event.

And, there’s more to come:

  • Wednesday, Oct. 12: East Picacho Elementary School, meet at 7:15 a.m. at the southeast corner of Northwind and Westwind;
  • Thursday, Oct. 13: Desert Hills Elementary School, meet at 7:15 a.m. at Sagecrest Park, 601 N. Roadrunner Parkway;
  • Friday, Oct. 14: White Sands Elementary School, meet at 7:15 a.m. at the School Age Care Building 1316 and walk along Ripley.

At its Sept. 13 regular meeting, the Doña Ana County Commission proclaimed October as Walk to School Month in Doña Ana County.

Also, in September the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) awarded $187,000 to LCPS for its Safe Routes to Schools program, which oversees the largest International Walk to School program.

“They have been the backbone funders of our program for many years. We are so grateful for their continued support,” said LCPS long-time Safe Routes to Schools program Coordinator Ashleigh Curry.
