Two community plays open this weekend in Las Cruces area


This is a huge weekend for theater lovers in the Las Cruces area. Two community plays are opening up.

“Radium Girls,” by D.W. Gregory and directed by Autumn Gieb, opens Friday, Jan. 28 for a three-week run at Black Box Theatre, 430 N. Main St. Downtown.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29 and Feb. 4-5 and 11-12; 2:30 p.m. Sundays, Feb. 6 and 13 and 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10.
Tickets are $15 regular admission, $12 for students and seniors over age 65 and $10 for all seats on Thursday, Feb. 10. The cast includes Debbie Jo Felix, David Arias, Autry Sutcliff, Penny Bever, Nancy Clein Tafoya, Lisa Taylor, Doug Abbott, Joseluis Solorzano and Genno Tafoya.
“Radium Girls,” from which the play takes its name, were female factory workers in New Jersey, Illinois and Connecticut, who, beginning in 1917, contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch dials with luminous paint. Musical version of ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ opens

“Little Miss Sunshine, the Musical” will also open Friday, Jan. 28, for a three-weekend run through Sunday, Feb. 13, at Las Cruces Community Theatre (LCCT), 313 N. Main St. Downtown.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 28-29 and Feb. 4-5 and 11-12; and 2 p.m. Sundays, Jan. 30 and Feb. 6 and 13.
Tickets are $17 for adults, $14 for senior citizens, students and members of the miliary and $10 for children. Reserve tickets at www.lcctnm.org/little-miss-sunshine.
The show is directed by Janet Beatty-Payne, with Amanda Bradford as musical director in addition to starring in the show. The cast includes Brandon Brown, Kayla Bradford, Hyde Brown, Amanda Bradford, Jason Wyatt, James Boberg, Teddy Sanchez, Francesca Perez-Wright, Steven Trujillo, Maya Bradford, Marley Yerxa and Sofia Wyatt. Ginny May is the show’s accompanist and Kim Skaggs is the percussionist. Music and lyrics are by William Finn, with book and direction by James Lapine. The musical was adapted from the 2006 film of the same name.
