The New Mexico State University Art Museum (UAM) will host art-making workshops Nov. 5 and 19 at UAM, 1308 E. University Ave., located in Devasthali Hall, near the intersection of University Avenue and Solano Drive.
The workshops, which are free of charge, are geared toward K-12 students, but all ages and experience levels are invited to participate and learn about historic ex-votos and contemporary Latinx artists, the museum said in a news release.
Participants will learn about making collages and make their own personal ex-votos, which are “a type of retablo (small devotional painting) depicting miracles painted on tin and found materials,” UAM said.
In advance of both workshops, participants are asked to “spend some time thinking about someone or something you are grateful to have in your life and have a digital photo representing that on your phone. Bring an iPad if you have one. “
Visit https://uam.nmsu.edu/programs/out-smart.html for additional information and instructions for both workshops.
The workshops are part of UAM’s Contemporary Ex-Voto: Devotion Beyond Medium exhibition, which pairs 19th and 20th century retablos from the NMSU Permanent Art Collection with new works by contemporary Latinx artists. The exhibition continues through Dec. 22 at UAM.
