Young at Heart senior chorus returns with love; April 7 concert on tap

It’s great news for music lovers, as the Young at Heart senior chorus returns for its first live performance in more than two years.

Young at Heart performed for residents at The Aristocrat March 6, 2020, said chorus chair and co-director Ray Scroggins. It was the last time the group sang together before the pandemic hit.

Chorus members “will pick up where they left off,” Scroggins said, with a concert at the same location -- The Aristocrat, an assisted-living facility at 2969 Claude Dove Drive – at 2p.m. Thursday, April 7.

As the chorus did before the shutdown, members will sing for four senior residences in April and the months to follow. Other local facilities they will visit include Solstice and Northrise Morningside, ending with a free performance open to the public at Good Samaritan auditorium, 3025 Terrace Drive, at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 28.

“We’ve been waiting a long time for this and know our audiences are waiting too,” Scroggins said. “It was almost impossible to provide live entertainment while everything was shut down.”

“My mom, Cynthia Apostalon, has been looking forward to singing again,” said Wendy Travis. “This will really perk her up!”

Apostalon is a resident at Northrise Morningside, one of the places the chorus performs, Scroggins said.

“I can't wait to start,” said new chorus member Carol Monahan. “Will start looking for my voice right away!”

Young at Heart’s April song list includes “Elmer’s Tune,” “Wait ‘Till the Sun Shines Nellie,” “On the Banks of the Wabash,” “Mississippi Mud,” “Rueben & Rachel,” “Moon Over Miami,” “Once in Love with Amy,” “Down Yonder,” “My Old Kentucky Home,” “Sioux City Sue,” “Louise,” “Georgia on My Mind,” “When It’s Springtime in the Rockies, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” and “God Bless America.”

Young at Heart, formed in 1972, sings familiar songs with “real” melodies to entertain residents of assisted living and nursing homes and senior centers in the Las Cruces area, Scroggins said. It also provides an opportunity for its senior members to sing and enjoy music and friendship together.
