A needed breather

Mayfield builds momentum, Gadsden responds, and MVC keeps rolling into October

September ended with local football programs heading in different directions.

Las Cruces, Centennial and Organ Mountain enter bye-weeks after each lost over the weekend, while Mayfield, Gadsden and Mesilla Valley Christian School move forward with victories behind them.

Las Cruces (5-1) suffered its first loss Thursday, falling 21-20 to Eldorado after opening the season with five straight wins. The Bulldawgs now have an extra week before returning Oct. 8 against Clovis, giving them time to regroup before the second half of their district schedule.

Centennial and Organ Mountain also head into the break at 3-3, and their return puts them directly across from one another. The Hawks are coming off a 50-10 loss at unbeaten Volcano Vista, while the Knights fell 55-12 at Hobbs. Centennial travels to Organ Mountain on Oct. 9 for the next matchup between Las Cruces programs.

Mayfield (2-4) enters October from a different position after beating Deming 38-22 for its second consecutive victory. Israel Cabañas scored three touchdowns for the Trojans, who have responded to an 0-4 start with back-to-back district wins.

The turnaround gives head coach Joseph Frias and Mayfield another opportunity to keep climbing when the Trojans travel to Alamogordo (2-4) at 7 p.m. Friday. The Tigers enter the matchup after a 54-19 loss to Artesia.

Gadsden (5-1) also bounced back Friday, defeating Goddard 34-20 one week after Artesia handed the Panthers their first loss. Deion Torres was among Gadsden’s difference-makers, coming away with an interception as the Panthers returned to the win column.

That response sends Gadsden into one of its biggest district games of the season. The Panthers visit Roswell (5-1) at 6 p.m. Friday, with both teams carrying one loss into the matchup. Roswell enters after a 50-0 win over Chaparral.

Mesilla Valley Christian (4-1) continued its strong start with a 42-16 win over Gateway Christian. Jaxson Warner and Kobe Redfearn have accounted for 12 touchdowns apiece, with Warner scoring seven times on the ground and four more as a receiver while also recording two interceptions. Redfearn has thrown nine touchdown passes.

MVC hosts Magdalena (4-1) at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Steers arrive after beating Cloudcroft 66-14.

Once the open dates are finished, the calendar gets crowded again. All six area programs will be back in action next week, beginning with Las Cruces against Clovis before Centennial and Organ Mountain meet the following night.
