Abandoned commercial building set ablaze Saturday

Posted

Las Cruces firefighters responded early Saturday morning to a multiple-alarm commercial building fire that had initially been reported as a tree fire, according to the Las Cruces Fire Department.

The fire was reported at the intersection of Espina Street and Missouri Avenue and the first units arrived just after 1 a.m., where they discovered the abandoned building ablaze on the 1700 block of Espina.

The LCFD reported that the fire grew rapidly enough for a second alarm to be called in order to bring more resources — and a total of 28 firefighters — to fight the fire, which was brought under control with an hour and extinguished with injuries reported. A limited search found no individuals inside the building.

The department said the building has been the site of repeated fires in recent years. The cause of this fire remained under investigation with no damage estimates reported as of Monday morning.
