Talk about a big draw!
Renowned artist, Las Cruces native and NMSU graduate Abel Garcia will return to his home town Oct. 17 to paint a special picture for Bras for a Cause, one of the signature events of Cancer Warriors Week.
Garcia will be live on stage at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum, creating a painting “that references Cancer Warriors,” event coordinator and Cancer Warriors founder Marci Dickerson said. The finished painting will be sold to the highest bidder in a live auction during the evening, along with eight custom-made and framed bras, “to show support for Cancer Warriors,” Dickerson said.
The second annual Bras for a Cause and nearly a dozen other events during Cancer Warriors Week, Oct. 12-19, were created by Dickerson to increase awareness and raise money for the fight against women’s cancers, including breast, ovarian and uterine cancer.
“It’s always heartwarming to come back to my hometown of Las Cruces, New Mexico,” said Garcia, whose talents include timed live paintings. “Myself and my clan are from Tortugas, New Mexico. I believe truly in my heart that giving to the city and the different communities of Las Cruces is so important.”
The live auction is just one of the highlights of Bras for a Cause, which will have a speakeasy theme (costumes are encouraged), including casino games; food prepared by four local female chefs, with “additional amazing dishes provided by Dickerson’s Catering,” Dickerson said; and live music by Sax Attitude featuring Tony Montano.
Bras for a Cause begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road. Tickets are $100.
