The New Mexico State women’s basketball team got back into the groove Thursday night, defeating Sam Houston 65-57 behind a strong start and big night from Lucia Yenes.

Yenes finished with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. She also played through foul trouble, finishing with five fouls for the night but staying aggressive on both ends of the hardwood.

NMSU opened both halves with extreme intensity. The Aggies stretched their lead to 16 in the second half, and they continued to hold off a late push from the Bearkats, who trimmed the lead to five in the final minute of the game.

“I just wanted to win tonight,” Yenes said. “The last few games didn’t go our way, so this was about the team locking in and getting back on track.”

Head coach Jody Adams said the win was a huge product of preparation and focus that stemmed from practice all week.

“We worked on it all week, press break, transition, out-of-bound situations,” Adams said. “When we stay focused and disciplined, I think we’re a really good team.”

She also mentioned the team’s improved composure in high pressure moments.

“We talked about having a reset word, a mental cue when frustration comes,” Adams said. “I’m just proud they took that to heart tonight and played through adversity.”

With the win, NMSU improved to 8-14 on the season and 4-6 in Conference USA. The Aggies will be back on the floor on Saturday at home against Louisiana Tech.
